Thing 10
Surprisingly, I didn't think using google docs was that difficult. I found it to be very similar to creating documents using Word applications. In my opinion, I don't really know how beneficial google docs could be to a classroom though. I think it would make my life a lot easier if I in charge of a department or a committee though. It would make sense to contact the members of your group in this manner. It would save time since it would take a lot of the leg work out of emailing. I really like the survey option google docs has to offer. If I were an administrator, I think I would use this application very often. It would be an easy way to get thoughts, ideas and opinions from staff members regarding any topic. Being a math person, I really like how you can get a summary of your results once the surveys have been completed. At the end of the year, I have my students complete a survey regarding their thoughts on my teaching style, class climate, class material etc. I would love to have students go to the media center and fill this survey out using google docs because it would save me time. It would summarize the results so I could quickly see the opinions of my students. As long as we had computers available it would be very practical. As far as for creating assignments, test, quizzes, etc, I see myself sticking with Microsoft Word. I would be willing to try the survey using google docs at the end of the year though.

My wife used it for a final exam in her special services class called Developing Skills. It took some time to get used to it but it did work. I have not used it very much.
ReplyDeleteI love the survey feature! As you can tell, I've used it for the 23 things class to help automate some things that I used to use email for. You could, as Otto suggested, even use the survey for an exam for students. The bad news is you still have to grade them!
ReplyDeleteI have computers in my room so access to Google Docs will be much more convenient for me. The spreadsheet application might be a better use for your students especially when trying to bring in real world uses for some of the math applications you are teaching. Most students are pretty familiar with using Microsoft Excel and the library and labs have the overhead LCD projectors so you could demonstrate from the computer. My lab (21) is available everyday during 5th and 6th hour if you need it.
